Corrections Victoria acknowledges the death of a 74 year old prisoner at St John's Hospital within Port Phillip Prison on 8 July 2023.

Deaths in custody have an impact on family members, friends and corrections staff, as well as victims of crime - we're working to ensure they are provided with the support they need. Support is also being provided to the men at Port Phillip Prison.

All deaths in custody are reported to the Coroners Court of Victoria, which formally determines the cause of death.

The department publishes non-identifying information regarding deaths in custody as soon as practical once the family or next of kin has been informed. If the next of kin requests that information is not published online, we will respect those wishes.
