In June the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre (DPFC) saw 12 women graduate from the Twinning Project program.
The Twinning Project, which has previously run twice at the Metropolitan Remand Centre, is delivered by the Melbourne City Football Club’s (MCFC) charitable arm, City in the Community.
It’s an 8 week program teaching participants about values, teamwork, leadership and cooperation as well as building their skills and knowledge in the game of football (or soccer).
The most recent program included a Transferable Skills and Pathways Day, which was attended by numerous community organisations including RecLink, Victoria Legal Aid and YSAS, with a focus on building support networks and contact for women post-release.
The day involved a tournament of 6 teams comprising of the participants as well as all the service providers and some Rehabilitation and Reintegration Branch staff, with the final being a very competitive game between the two DPFC teams showcasing their newly learnt skills.
The program has also included guest speakers such as Melbourne City Goalkeeper and former Matildas Captain Melissa Barbieri, and current City Captain and New Zealand international Rebekah Stott, inspiring the women with her story of overcoming a cancer diagnosis only a few years ago to now be back competing at the highest level, including just a few weeks ago at the Paris Olympics.
