Family and friends of people in prison can email their loved one using the Email a Prisoner service.
It’s available for people in all Victorian prisons.
Using the Email a Prisoner service
Sign up for the service at www.emailaprisoner.com.au (External link).
To use the service you must:
- give your current residential address
- prove your identity
- know the location of the person in prison.
If you do not know the person in prison’s location, you can write to them care of Corrections Victoria and ask them to tell you.
Contact a person in prison without knowing their location
If you do not know which prison someone is in, you can contact them by writing to Corrections Victoria. We will forward your mail to them.

In your letter, you could ask them:
- to tell you which prison they’re in, so you can post them letters, send them property or email them
- to add you to their visit list, so you can visit them or send them money
- to add your phone number to their phone list, so they can call you from prison.
If you are already on their visit list, you can call 1300 191 835 (External link) to confirm which prison they are currently in.
Cost to send emails
There are fees to use the Email a Prisoner service.
You pay each time you want to:
- send a message to a person in prison
- attach a photo
- get a reply from the person in prison.
The sender pays these fees. It’s free for the person in prison.
