It is with great sorrow that Corrections Victoria acknowledges the passing of a 27-year-old Aboriginal person in prison at Port Phillip Prison on 4 September 2024.
The Coroners Court of Victoria will formally determine the cause of death, in accordance with usual process. The passing of any person in custody is a heartbreaking tragedy and the team at Corrections Victoria sends its deepest condolences to the person’s family.
We recognise that all passings in custody have impacts on family members, friends, victims and the broader Aboriginal community, and we will continue to work at ensuring they are provided with the support they need.
The Aboriginal Justice Caucus has been notified of the passing, and Corrections Victoria continue to work in partnership with Caucus.
Corrections Victoria has offered support to the person’s family and will continue to be led by the family in ensuring appropriate notification and cultural considerations are followed.
