National Corrections Day is an important national event and is held annually.
Corrective Services NSW organised the first event in 2017. The event was a way to recognise the work and commitment of corrections staff and to say thank you.
It was a success and all states and territories in Australia have adopted the event since. It is also celebrated in New Zealand.
A day of significance
National Corrections Day highlights the often publicly unseen work that corrections staff do.
It also acknowledges their vital role in:
- protecting the Victorian community
- providing safe and secure prison environments
- supporting people in custody to achieve positive rehabilitation outcomes so they can successfully reintegrate into the community.
Many dedicated staff work for Victorian Corrections. There are over 4,400 staff that work across the state’s public prisons, post sentence residential facilities and head office, and a further 1,200 staff that work in private prisons. More than 950 staff work in Community Correctional Services.
National Corrections Day 2025
Friday 16 May 2025 is Victoria’s 8th National Corrections Day.
Victoria’s theme for National Corrections Day this year is ‘embracing diversity’: Acknowledging the different people and roles that make up Australia’s corrections portfolio.
‘This National Corrections Day, we recognise our incredible workforce who work in various complex, dynamic and diverse roles,’ said Corrections Victoria Commissioner, Larissa Strong.
‘This includes prison officers, community corrections officers, post sentence workers, programs and services workers, clinicians and health staff.
‘Many of these roles work on the frontline, supporting rehabilitation by addressing the underlying causes of offending behaviour and helping create safer communities.’
To mark the occasion, many of our prisons will be lit up in blue for National Corrections Day in honour of the hard work of our corrections staff. A range of events will also be hosted including morning teas and barbeques, to say thank you to those who work in corrections services.
