Community work participants create 6,000 seed packs for Schools Tree Day

Remand

Pregnancy and childcare

Women in custody who are pregnant or who are the primary carers of young children may apply for the Living with Mum Program.

Prohibited items (contraband)

A prohibited item ('contraband') is anything introduced or found in a prison that is not permitted.

Property and clothing

The type and amount of property and clothing prisoners are allowed to keep varies from prison to prison.

Recreation

Activities in Victorian prisons ensure access to fresh air for at least an hour a day and access to a library.

Work, education and training

Prisoners have the opportunity to work during their sentence to build work habits and skills.

Leaving prison

All Victorian prisons have Transitional staff to assist prisoners to prepare for their release.

Origami seedling packs in a box containing seedlings, origami boxes and instructions for planting and care.

Community work participants created more than 6,000 seed packs as part of a project to support National Tree Day and Schools Tree Day 2024.

The origami seedling project is a collaboration between the South East Metropolitan Region (SEMR) Community Work Program and Planet Ark.

It helps to promote hands-on learning around horticulture and environmental awareness.

Community work participants also constructed origami seedling packs that contained seedlings, origami boxes and instructions for planting and care.

The seedling boxes were provided by the schools to their students who participated in Schools Tree Day and National Tree Day, allowing students to continue their horticultural experience at home.

35 primary schools throughout the SEMR catchment area participated in the initiative this year.

The SEMR Community Work Team received a lot of positive feedback from the participating schools.

Many schools also expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the donations.

The community work participants who created the origami seedling boxes were proud to contribute to such a worthy initiative.

This project enabled them to fulfill their community service obligations and make a positive contribution to the community.

The SEMR Community Work Team looks forward to continuing to establish new and meaningful partnerships that have strong community connections and that benefit all involved.
