The Koori prisoner mental health and cognitive function study delivers on a commitment of phase two of the Aboriginal Justice Agreement to create an evidence base to guide the development and enhancement of culturally appropriate mental health services for Aboriginal prisoners.

The study was undertaken by Monash University in partnership with the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (External link) and makes a number of recommendations to improve mental health and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal prisoners.

The Department is working with the Aboriginal community through the Aboriginal Justice Forum to develop a Social and Emotional Wellbeing Strategy for Aboriginal prisoners in response to the recommendations made in the Study.
