Dog treats for Ararat Dog Rescue

The Hopkins Correctional Centre Reintegration team, supported by the kitchen team, have implemented an innovative program to give back to the community, while also offering invaluable opportunities for rehabilitation and helping people in prison to develop new skills.

People making dog treats

Through the program, people in prison prepare delicious dog treats that are sold at fundraising events held throughout the year to raise much needed funds for Ararat Dog Rescue.

Kitchen staff source high-quality ingredients and set up the food preparation area efficiently so that people in prison can be involved in every step of the process, from mixing and shaping to baking and packaging the treats.

By supporting the Ararat Dog Rescue, the initiative fosters a stronger sense of community engagement and compassion.

Each treat sold is a step towards rehabilitation for people in prison, providing meaningful skills and a sense of accomplishment.

Recycling for a better future

In a step towards environmental sustainability, the Hopkins Correctional Centre Facilities team has implemented a comprehensive recycling project in partnership with the Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme.

This initiative aims to reduce the prison's carbon footprint while also contributing to community causes, highlighting a commitment to both environmental and social responsibility.

Normal recycling processes were adapted to accommodate the new scheme, with specialised bins and collection bags for sorting recyclables.

By taking part in the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme, the prison not only contributes to a cleaner environment but also generates funds through recycling efforts.

These funds are donated to Ararat Neighbourhood House, completing the cycle of giving and sustainability.
