Number of prisoners in Victoria

There were 7,151 prisoners in the Victorian prison system on 30 June 2020. This represents an increase of 57.6 per cent on the 30 June 2010 figure of 4,537.

Victorian imprisonment rate

The Victorian imprisonment rate was 136.1 per 100,000 of adult population on 30 June 2020 (based on the above figure of 7,151).

Percentage of prisoners who return to prison after release from custody

Of the prisoners who were released in 2017-18, 44.2% had returned to prison under sentence within two years of release.

Percentage of offenders who return to Community Corrections after completing their order 

Of the offenders who were discharged from Community Corrections orders in 2017–18, 13.9%  had returned with a new community correctional sanction within two years.

There were 10,679 offenders on Community Corrections orders on 30 June 2020.

Victorian offender rate

The Victorian Community-based Corrections offender rate was 219.6 per 100,000 of adult population in the June quarter 2020.

What it costs to keep a prisoner in custody and an offender in the community

The Council of Australian Governments reports that real net operating expenditure per prisoner per day in Victoria in 2019–20 was $323.45 while net operating expenditure per Community Corrections offender per day in 2019–20 was $46.84.
