Corrections Victoria acknowledges the death of a 43 year-old male prisoner at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne on 5 February.

We send our deepest condolences to the man’s family.

Deaths in custody have an impact on family members, friends and corrections staff, as well as victims of crime – we’re working to ensure they are provided with the support they need.

The staff and men at Port Phillip Prison are also being supported.

All deaths in custody are reported to the Coroners Court of Victoria, which formally determines the cause of death.

The department will publish non-identifying information regarding deaths in custody as soon as practical once the family or next of kin has been informed. If the next of kin requests that information is not published online, we will respect these wishes.
