This new, purpose-built forensic mental health unit was required to replace the existing residential mental health unit at DPFC, which no longer met its service needs. It provided an exciting opportunity to design a built-for-purpose, flexible and innovative, much-needed forensic mental health unit for women prisoners.
Managed by Forensicare, there is a strong focus on providing a healing environment not only for the prisoners, but importantly also one that supports the well-being and safety of all staff involved. This approach recognises that many women who are imprisoned are indeed themselves victims of crime and have challenging mental health conditions as a result.
Located close by in the prison complex, the new 48-bed Rosewood Unit comprises 22 out-patient forensic mental health beds and 26 mainstream beds. The two new units together form a 70-bed mental health and well-being precinct for our flagship women's prison.
