Corrections Victoria would like to acknowledge the passing of a prisoner at Ravenhall Correctional Centre on 7 March 2021.
All deaths in custody are reported to the Coroner, who formally determines the cause of death.
As the prisoner was an Aboriginal man, the Aboriginal Justice Caucus was advised on the day and we continue to work closely with them and the First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria.
The family of the man were notified with our condolences, and a Smoking Ceremony is being arranged.
We recognise that all deaths in custody have impacts on family members, friends, corrections staff and the Aboriginal community, and we’re working to ensure they are provided with the support they need.
As of 11:59pm Thursday 24 June, further eased restrictions are in place. Learn more.
Greater Sydney incl. Central Coast, Shellharbour, Blue Mountains, Wollongong are red zones under VIC’s Travel Permit System from 1am 25 June.
As of Tuesday 25 May 2021, all visits to Victorian prisons are suspended until further notice while the current COVID-19 situation is assessed. Visits will recommence as soon as possible, when it is safe to do so.
