Corrections Victoria acknowledges the death of a 62-year-old prisoner from Metropolitan Remand Centre at St Vincent's Hospital on 14 September, 2022. We send our deepest condolences to the man’s family.
Deaths in custody have an impact on family members, friends and corrections staff, as well as victims of crime – we’re working to ensure they are provided with the support they need.
The staff and men at the Metropolitan Remand Centre are also being supported.
All deaths in custody are reported to the Coroners Court of Victoria, which formally determines the cause of death.
The department will publish non-identifying information regarding deaths in custody as soon as practical once the family or next of kin has been informed. If the next of kin requests that information is not published online, we will respect these wishes.
