The Victorian Government has announced the awarding of the new contract for the transport of prisoners between courts, prisons, youth justice centres and police stations.

Following a competitive tender process, the government has awarded the new contract to G4S Custodial Services Pty Ltd (G4S), which has held the current contract since 2009. The new contract is for a five-year period from 1 October 2015.

The tender process established that G4S offered the best service model and value for money to meet the Department of Justice & Regulation’s specific needs.

Based on current prisoner projections, the value of the new contract is estimated at $95.7 million. The contract will provide a more responsive, accountable and effective transport system.

There are incentives for G4S to meet performance standards as well as the implementation of a state-of-the-art prisoner transport scheduling technology, which will deliver an improved service.

There are approximately 60,000 prisoner movements per annum on behalf of Corrections Victoria, Victoria Police and the Department of Health and Human Services.
