A new medium security men’s prison is being built at Ravenhall, in Melbourne’s west, to accommodate 1,000 prisoners.
The new prison will be adjacent to the Metropolitan Remand Centre and the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre on vacant government-owned land.
The Ravenhall Prison Project is being delivered as a full service public private partnership (PPP), with the GEO Consortium being responsible for the design, construction, financing, maintenance and operation of the facility over 25 years.
GEO Consortium was selected to deliver the project following a comprehensive tender process. Key GEO Consortium members are GEO Group Australia, John Holland Group, Honeywell and Capella Capital.
The Victorian Institute of Forensic Mental Health, known as Forensicare, will provide forensic mental health services at the prison, and health services will be delivered by Correct Care Australasia (formerly GEO Care).
Key alliance partners, including Kangan Institute, YMCA, The Gathering Place and Melbourne City Mission, will deliver programs and services both in custody and post-release in the community .

Construction commenced in February 2015 and is expected to be completed in late 2017.

In 2013, the Department of Justice and Regulation, in conjunction with the Ravenhall Prison Project Community Advisory Group (CAG), invited interested individuals, businesses and community groups to attend information sessions on the proposed men's prison at Ravenhall. The CAG, which includes representatives from the cities of Melton and Brimbank as well as the local community, provides input on local matters relating to the development.
